RV Parking at Walmart

The frequently asked question below is from the Walmart Corporate website regarding RV parking at Walmart stores.

Question
Can I park my RV at a Walmart store?

Answer
While we do not offer electrical service or accommodations typically necessary for RV customers, Walmart values RV travelers and considers them among our best customers. Consequently, we do permit RV parking on our store lots as we are able. Permission to park is extended by individual store managers, based on availability of parking space and local laws. Please contact management in each store to ensure accommodations before parking your RV.

  1. Walmart may not own the property you are staying at and allows it based on the lease it has with the propery owner. I work at a Walmart that has 9 other stores on it the lot so does Walmart have say over this of course not. The stay is permissive and may or may not be up to the store manager but it you do park over night don’t complain to me at the TLE some parked your RV in if your next the the building at the TLE…

      • Whoa, a couple of nights, probably no big deal. But you parked for 9 months?? Really…? A manager probably sold squares on when you were going to leave the lot on foot. per Walmart “Permission to park is extended by individual store managers, based on availability of parking space and local laws.” Taking advantage of their good graces and thinking you were not going to be towed was foolish…

  2. the problem is that their are people that abuse the privilege and ruin it for everyone else, cant have people staying in the parking lot for months, best thing to do is find an rv park and plan your trip they are everywhere

    • There are many many WalMarts that no longer allow overnight parking for RVs and trucks. So don’t assume if you pull in late at a Wal Mart that it’s ok. You will be asked to move along.

      • Any time I’ve parked at Walmart was WITH the store manager’s OK, I stayed away from the entrance area where cars parked, DIDN’T do any slide-outs, AND left about 8AM, after I had coffee. Sometimes WM had fast food sites, and we used them. As well, I ALWAYS bought groceries, fresh milk, etc, $50 to $100 minimum! The managers appreciate a thank you when you leave, TOO! NEVER had a complaint! BTW, some WMs have security ! If there are NO WMs amenable to parking, try Cabelas/Bass Pro. Don’t know of ANY who DON’T allow parking. Helps if you have a Cabelas/Bass Pro store card!

    • We called several Walmarts and Sams clubs (that appeared to be friendly on the list) and was told no by everyone of them. 6 in total. We were trying to park for 4 hours.

      • If you know the location of each store that told you overnight parking was not allowed, contact me so I can update the list. The information on this site is not associated with Walmart but is community driven.

  4. I’ve lost track of how many Walmart parking lots we have spent the night in with our RV from coast to coast and north to south. That said, we have a process. We go into the store, talk to the manager, and have them write permission on a 3×5 card I supply. We put it on our dash or affix to our driver side window. If we are pulling in late I’ll call ahead, ask permission to put “permission granted for dates x to x overnight parking, via phone conversation at x time.” I write the manager’s name.

We have been turned away. In PA most Walmarts are on property owned by the township, so township ordinance of no overnight parking is enforced. I didn’t know Lincoln NE had 4 Walmarts, but I can say we were turned away at one and accepted at another. CA within about 50 miles of the coast we were turned away but in eastern parts we were accepted. In OK we were told only if our rig was 10 years old or newer, so we just had to show documentation. In ID it’s a ‘no’ if the Walmart is near a major event center (such as Nampa), but fine at other locations. Including the eastern side where we found a Walmart with electric connections, picnic tables and grassy areas! First-come availability and number of nights limited, but it was nice to recharge! And in MO we were asked if we needed to place an immediate pickup order for pickup on foot (during covid). Talk about meeting a need!

The other thing we have found, is when we communicate with the managers and are told ‘no,’ most often they are set with a mental list of other places to try. Several have even drawn us a map or provided phone numbers. So communicate, be nice, smile, and enjoy the road. We have kids who just realized there are things called ‘RV parks.’ They grew up staying in parking lots on our travels!

  5. It should be noted that most, if not virtually all of Walmart lots posted with “No Overnight Parking” signs is simply compliance of local sign ordinances by Walmart. For nearly 20 years I have parked at Walmarts with such signs from coast to coast and border to border, and have never been asked to leave. Walmart doesn’t enforce them, and the local cops have better things to do than hassle law abiding RVers who are spending money in their town.
The single best way to find out is by calling the store and choose customer service from the menu on their answering machine. They often answer in their own sweet time, but when they do, simply ask “Does your store allow traveling RVers to spend one night on your lot?” On rare occasion they’ll recite the local parking ordinance if there is one. If you do pull into the lot anyway, ask one of the fellows gathering carts if he sees RVs parked overnight. He’ll nearly always say yes, and then you’ve got your real answer: they do allow it.

    • in some big cities, Walmart enforces this rule. i was asked to leave twice, one time in Houston. and forget another city’s name

    • From Sacramento to Tahoe along highway 50 local law enforcement will tell you to leave. There’s to much money in making tourist pay to park. I’m assuming most of the Cali coast line is the same.

      • We were asked to leave a Walmart in Pensacola, Fl. while sleeping in our car on our way to Orlando. The kid faced “assistant Manager” came out and told us we had to leave. Motels are too expensive and didn’t want to spend the money.

    • My brother just got a 100.00 ticket for sleeping on Walmart lot in Marshal texas. Beat on his door at 3:00 am and had to pay with card right then and told to leave. He told her his tail lights went out was the reason he stopped Did not make a difference she told him to hit the road and if he needed some help she had a friend that could help.

    • Walmart does not own every store nor does it control local ordinances… the walmart I work at has 8 other stores so you may not be using a ‘Walmart’ parking lot but a mall situation with local overnight camping restrictions…

  6. Lincoln, Nebraska has a city ordinance against overnight parking including all four Walmart locations. The Walmart in York, Nebraska is posted- No Overnight Parking.

    • I have not been able to find the ordinance prohibiting overnight RV parking for all of Lincoln, Nebraska. I did find restrictions for truck parking and a law that states any vehicle cannot be parked in one place for more than 24 hours.

Our database currently indicates two Lincoln, Nebraska, locations do not allow overnight RV parking. Two others are indicated as allowing it. I called one store and was told it is permitted but that RVers needed to park away from the building.

With regard to the Walmart in York, our data already shows overnight RV parking is not allowed. Thank you for confirming this.

      • I was at the Lincoln, NE location with a green check. Two walmart employees came to our RV and told us there was no overnight parking and then added…… it’s not Walmart, it’s a city ordnance. That’s all I know.

        • Thanks for the reply. It looks like I’ll have to do some more digging. It is possible that a store manager is using their interpretation of an ordinance to prohibit overnight RV parking. It could also be an ordinance I have not yet found. Thanks, again, for the follow up reply.

          • This is interesting, I live in Omaha and work in Lincoln so I drive by the north Lincoln Walmart almost every day. I see RV’s parked there in WM/Sams (almost next to each other) parking lot very frequently. Same for the Gretna, NE location.

          • I have found you need to call. Some of the Walmarts I’ve called have given a resounding NO. Others have said it’s safe to ignore the No Overnight Parking signs- just park off to the side and you won’t be bothered and that trucks do it all the time. Others have said ok, but please be gone by 7 am when we open. Others must say YES. They all don’t want you settled in – like no grilling, hanging out in the parking lot, etc. It is becoming more rare to find the YES. I think overuse , overstaying (it’s meant to be one night, just for sleeping) and leaving stuff behind. One Walmart

  7. No more overnight parking at Walmart in New Orleans due to Covid according to security personnel. Today, 1/26/2021, Tried to park near police station where we usually overnight but security person told us he has to clear the parking lot at 10pm every night.

    • The store’s phone number as listed on the map is correct. Are you simply saying you cannot confirm the overnight parking status? You may need to personally speak with management by going in to the store or keep calling until someone answers the phone.

  9. Thank You, Walmart for being there a few times for us during our NEWBIE RVing travel days. Once while running to avoid a pinning Hurricane hitting south LA. We drove the night to the top LEFT of LA near Texas. The Walmart parking lot was packed with trucks, fellow RV’ers. The Hurricane did hit South East of us. We did do some shopping in the morning hours prior to our departure. We were thankful you were there to provide us a safe place for the night. I am always saddened, to learn that some RV’ers take advantage of your kindness to travelers. Many fellow RV’ers and I find some unkind acts by fellow RV’ers most disgusting and aggravating, to say the least. All I can say other than finding needed RV supplies and other selections for us. Thank You, Walmart for being more than a good neighbor miles away from our own homes. Thank you one and all for your kindness and the peace of mind you give us while we sleep outside one night and go Thanks Walmart.
